10 LESSONS FOR YOUNG DESIGNERS. BY JOHN C JAY OF WIEDEN+KENNEDY
Some insightful lessons from Wieden+Kennedy’s Executive Creative Director, John C Jay. Although focused from a design perspective, I feel that these lessons would apply just as well for anyone working within the creative industry. Via AIGA.
1: Be authentic. The most powerful asset you have is your individuality, what makes you unique. It’s time to stop listening to others on what you should do.
2: Work harder than anyone else and you will always benefit from the effort.
3: Get off the computer and connect with real people and culture. Life is visceral.
4: Constantly improve your craft. Make things with your hands. Innovation in thinking is not enough.
5: Travel as much as you can. It is a humbling and inspiring experience to learn just how much you don’t know.
6: Being original is still king, especially in this tech-driven, group-grope world.
7: Try not to work for stupid people or you’ll soon become one of them.
8: Instinct and intuition are all-powerful. Learn to trust them.
9: The Golden Rule actually works. Do good.
10: If all else fails, No. 2 is the greatest competitive advantage of any career.
The fairy from the country of dawn

Somewhere in the country of dawn
Where she hides herself in that pretty gown
The mask she wears distinguishes her from all
She’s pure as the stream that falls
She goes around spreading smile that she has
Her prized possession, she names and wants it to pass
The gentle breeze reaches her scarf as she runs through the meadow
The ray that strikes forms her replica in the form of a shadow
She seems to be lost in the world of her own
And enlightens the world as the sun that has shone
She lives in her dream and has story of her own
We call her the princess of the country of dawn
The fairy we’ve named her for her deeds
She’s got all, there’s nothing that she needs
Here in the name of a fairy a history that she creates
A bold young lady in the beautiful world she makes
Her words seem so clean and pure
To heal the world, that’s why she’s here
Her calm words and smile that brings delight
We’re pretty sure she’ll help end all that fight
The lady with the light we call
She’ll solve the trouble forever and for all
She builds a bridge to the city of hope
Unites us all as if bounded by a rope
She shows us the way back to the light
This in the past was out of sight
We’re pretty sure that with her help we’ll build a better home
And pray for the peace lost way back to come
She says we have to be us on our own
So she could go back to her country of dawn!
